Sidney Aylesworth Guptill

1928-2015

Mr. Sidney A. Guptill of Seal Cove, Grand Manan Island passed away at the Grand Manan Hospital on Tuesday July 7, 2015.  He was the son of the late Vance and Beulah (Ingalls) Guptill.  Sidney worked in his early years as a fisherman, then for NB Power, and he is most remembered for his work for the Coast Guard as a light keeper.  His career took him to many light stations including; Head Harbour, Gannet Rock, and South West Head.  While working at South West Head Light Station in 1963 Sidney was involved in the rescue of two American Fisherman when their boat went adrift and wrecked on the back of the Island during a winter storm.  Although his part was significant as one of the main hero’s through his humble nature he was modest about his role in the event.  He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, and was a lifetime member and supporter of the Grand Manan Wildlife Association.  Chatting over a cup of coffee, or a hunting trip with David T. Green, a long time and special friend were cherished times for Sidney. Four wheeler rides, walks in the woods and trips to camp were his passion. He enjoyed life and the time he had with his wife Barbara for 39 years.  He is survived by his wife Barbara (Ingersoll), three daughters; Roseanne Cook of Georgia, USA, Judy Harvey (Cole) of Seal Cove, and Kimberly Bellefleur (Gilles) of Saint John.  One son Vincent Guptill of Seal Cove. One sister Ethel MacDonald of St. Stephen, and one brother Gene Guptill of Ingalls Head.  His grandchildren, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by one daughter Carolyn, one son Wade, and one granddaughter Michelle Harvey.
