"Al" Albert James Lyndon  Hobbs

Mr. Albert James Lyndon Hobbs of Grand Harbour Grand Manan Island passed away peacefully at the Grand Manan Hospital on Thursday January 22, 2015.  He was born in Toronto, ON , the son of the late Albert and Isabella (McClinton) Hobbs.  In his early working years he worked for a Circus and enjoyed entertaining audiences. He was constantly gaining as much knowledge as he could on topics that piqued he interest and also in his work life. In 1952 while involved in the Boy Scout program, as a leader,  he met and married his wife Gloria. He worked inside sales for Robert Steel Co. and then for Russell Steel in Hamilton. In 1966 they moved to Halifax and he worked in sales for a window company. While in Nova Scotia he received his real estate license and worked sales and later in the head offices for Central Trust then later Canada Trust. In 1984 he and Gloria moved to Grand Manan Island and acquired and operated the Grand Harbour Inn until their retirement in 1997.  He then made his passion for organic gardening into a business following their retirement. He was a very community minded person and was a faithful supporter and life member of the Grand Manan Rotary Club. Working through the offices of the Rotary Club he was the Past President and also served as the Quarter Master for longer than any other member. He was the Parade Master for the Rotary Days Parade, and enjoyed helping with the canteen and loved organizing the chicken barbeques.  He also was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship Award in recognition for his community work and service.   He is survived by his wife Mrs. Gloria (Fowler) Hobbs., one daughter Stephanie Hobbs of Orillia, ON., one son Stephen Hobbs (Maureen) of Acton, ON., his brother Bill Hobbs (Laurent) of Ottawa, ON., and his grandson Chris Hobbs. As well as a sister in law, niece and some cousins in Ontario.

A memorial service will take place at the St. Paul’s Anglican Church Hall on Saturday January 24, 2015 at 1:30 pm with Rev. Dana Dean officiating.  There will be a reception immediately following the service and all are welcome and invited to attend for a time of fellowship and reflection of Al’s life, so please bring your stories about Al to share with the his family.  Donations may be made to the Grand Manan Hospital Foundation, or the  charity of the donor’s choice.  Funeral arrangements are in the care of Ells Funeral Home Inc., 1199 Route 776, Grand Manan, NB E5G 1G2.
