Florence Kathleen Griffin
Mrs. Florence Kathleen Griffin (nee Smith) of Halifax, NS died peacefully on November 10, 2014 at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Centre, Infirmary Site. Her daughter, Pamela was at her side as was her very dear friend, Bertha Galpin. She was 90 years old. Born in Maine, she was the eldest daughter of the later Frank and Beatrice Smith (nee Blackmore) of Castalia, Grand Manan, N.B. After graduating from North Head Superior School, she attended the Modern Business College in Saint John, N.B. and worked as a secretary for many years, both in Saint John and later in Halifax. She was a past member of the Hon. Edward Cornwallis Chapter IODE and a past member of the Waegwoltic and Saraquay Clubs. She volunteered for the Red Cross for many years, including welcoming war brides in 1946 and 1947. In later years she volunteered with seniors and cooked for Hope Cottage.
She is predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Allison, her nephew Gary Green and her niece Janice Russell. She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Griffin-Hody (William), her beloved grandchildren, Max and Arden Hody (Ottawa), her sister Roberta (Walter) Green (Castalia, Grand Manan), her sister Mabel Bonnar (Fredericton), nephews Dana and Tracy (Julana) Green, great nieces Lanette Wilson (Wade), Tina Dakin (Wade), great nephews Darcy and Derek Russell, all of Grand Manan as well as several great-grand nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will take place on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of the Ascension, North Head, Grand Manan, N.B. with Rev. Dana Dean officiating followed by the burial of ashes in the North Head Community Cemetery. This will be followed by a reception in the Church of Ascension Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in Florence's memory can be made to the I.W.K. Hospital for Children in Halifax, N.S. or to any charity of choice. A gathering of friends and family will take place in Halifax the following week.
Many thanks to the loving care from the staff of unit 8.3, QEII, Infirmary Site - care given not only to Florence herself, for which she was very grateful, but also to her daughter and friends through a long day and night.
