H. W. John Toyer

Mr. H. W. John Toyer of North Head Grand Manan Island passed away at his residence on Saturday October 26, 2013.  He was born of the late John and Nellie (Penney) Toyer in England.  John served in the Royal Navy as a submariner, later in his career he served aboard submarines in the Royal Canadian Navy.  John and his wife Clare acquired the Shorecrest Lodge on Grand Manan and operated the lodge until they sold it and took over the Ferry Wharf Inn.  One of John’s last enterprises was the local favorite "Tipsy Takeout" where the fish and chips were renowned as the best in town.  He sang in the Community Choir on the Island, and also the Church of Ascension Choir.  He is survived by his wife Clare (Lowe) Toyer. Two daughters; Christine (Philip) Fleming of Lantz, NS, Joanne (Mike) Ingalls of North Head, NB.  Two sons; Tony (Wendy) Toyer of Richmond, BC, and David (Luisa) Toyer of Fredericton, NB.  One sister Janet (Edward) Cater of Herts, UK.  One brother Christopher (Rowan) Toyer of Beds, UK.  Also his brother-in-law and sister-in-law David and Mavis Lowe of Nottingham, UK, brother-in-law Derek DeBarr of Nottingham, UK.  Ten grand children, nine great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many friends.  Besides his parents he was predeceased by one sister Eileen Leach, and one sister-in-law Iris DeBarr.

The service to Celebrate John’s life will take place at the Church of Ascension on Wednesday October 30, 2013 at 1:30 PM with Rev. Dana Dean officiating.  A reception will follow at the Marathon Inn and all are invited to attend following the service.  John’s family has requested that donations may be made to the A.L.S. Society of Canada, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.   Funeral arrangements are in the care of Ells Funeral Home Inc., 1199 Route 776, Grand Manan, NB E5G 1G2.
