Johanna Morse

1927-2021

Johanna Morse

GRAND MANAN – It is with heavy hearts the family of Johanna (van Mourik) Morse, age 93, announce her peaceful passing which occurred on May 4, 2021 at the Grand Manan Hospital.  She left behind a void that can never be filled but we rejoice in the thought of her stepping through the portals of Heaven and meeting her Saviour face to face.  Born September 5, 1927, she was the daughter of the late John and Allegonda (van Ton) van Mourik.

Mom and our dad lived by the words in an old poem "let me live by the side of the road and be a friend to man."  Their home was always warm and inviting and anyone that crossed their path became a treasured friend.  Countless have wonderful memories while gathered around their kitchen table.  Mom was known for her cooking and especially her fried dough.

She worked along side dad stringing and boning herring and later varnishing for his wood working business.  Many children have mittens that Gram Morse/Oma made for them, some even recently.

She was a faithful member of the White Head Baptist Church for nearly seventy years.  She had a deep faith and if you knew her, your name is most likely on her prayer list.  She lived her faith in many ways, through her kindness and generosity always putting others before self.  She was known for always baking to give to others.  Even at 93 years old, in failing health, she baked bread to give away.

Johanna is survived by her daughter, Doreen Christie (Chico) of Hampton, her son Allen Morse (Sonya) of Grand Manan, four grandchildren, Derek Christie (Radecia), Amanda Christie, Aaron Morse (Jackee), Trevor Morse, two great granddaughters, Alexa and Jewel Christie, one brother Bill Mourik (Thelma), one sister Artje Ingalls, one sister-in-law Karen Morse, several special nieces and nephews and many cherished friends.

Besides her parents, and her husband of 58 years, Lawrence Morse, Johanna was pre-deceased by an infant son, Brian Lawrence, one sister, Marie (Fleet) Russell, two brothers Jan and Harry Mourik, and a special brother-in-law Myron Morse.

Visitation will be held at the White Head Baptist Church on Thursday, May 6 from 2-4 pm.  A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 7 at 2:15 with Pastor John Boyd officiating.  Due to the on-going pandemic the funeral will be by invitation only, masks and physical distancing must be adhered to at all times.  Donations in Johanna’s memory can be made to the White Head Baptist Church, White Head Cemetery fund, Canadian Heart and Stroke foundation, or charity of the donor’s choice.
