Ralph Hicks

1941-2015

Ralph Hicks

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Ralph A. Hicks announces his passing at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on Friday, September 25th, 2015 at the age of 74. Born in Truro, NS, on February 12th, 1941, he was the husband of Donna Hicks (Smith) of Fredericton, NB.

In addition to his wife, Donna, he leaves behind his daughters, Lori Hicks Burtt (Stephen) of Fort Saskatchewan, AB and Julie McLaughlin (Robyn) of Grand Manan, NB; Papa's little darlings, his granddaughters, Breighten Donna and Bennett Lori McLaughlin of Grand Manan, NB; brothers, Paul Hicks (Jean) of Fredericton, NB, Dale Hicks (Marjorie) of Salisbury, NB, Clyde Hicks (Sharon) of Riverview, NB, and Roger Hicks (Barbara) of Guelph, ON; and several nieces, nephews and other family. Ralph was predeceased by his parents, Rev. Clyde and Nettie (Johnson) Hicks and his nephew, Troy Hicks.

Ralph went to lineman school in 1961 after which he worked for a short time as a lineman before becoming the foreman of a high line maintenance crew. Ralph went on to teach at lineman school before eventually becoming Personnel Manager at NB Power Head Office.  He then transferred from NB Power to NB Liquor where he also acted as Manager of Personnel before working his way up to General Manager of Operations. Following a final transfer back to NB Power, he held the position of Manager of Transmission and Terminal Construction and Maintenance. He retired from NB Power in 1995.

Ralph loved to golf and fish on the Miramichi River with his best friend and fishing buddy, Richard Ward, and also enjoyed travelling south to Myrtle Beach and Florida with his family. First and foremost, however, he loved to spend time with his wife, daughters, sons-in-law, and especially his granddaughters, whom he adored. His family will remember him as a hardworking man, loyal and honest, with strong family values. He was a true friend. Ralph was a brave soul and a hero to all who knew him.

Ralph's family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to nephrologists Dr. Nessa Goguen and Dr. Paul Sohi, and to the many dedicated medical professionals in Saint John, Fredericton, and Halifax who contributed to Ralph's care over the last 17 years of his compromised health.

In keeping with Ralph's wishes, cremation without ceremony has taken place. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held in the J.A. McAdam Memorial Chapel on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 1:00 pm with Rev. Paul Thompson officiating, followed by a reception in the adjoining room. Ralph's family look forward to sharing happy memories with everyone as they celebrate his life. For those who wish, donations in Ralph's memory can be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada or the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital Foundation - Dialysis Unit.
